Exploring Goddess Brigid

Brigid is a goddess of Celtic origin, associated with Imbolc celebration of the Pagan wheel of the year. She carries different versions of her name: Brighid, Brigit, Bridget, Bride.

On January 2021 I journeyed through exploring different faces, properties and characteristics associated with this goddess. Brigid is one of the most important goddesses in Irish mythology, and she plays many different roles.

She is the goddess of fire, patroness of poetry, fertility, agriculture, blacksmiths, healing, household animals and household skills and matters.

Since 6th century when Christianity took over the Celtic lands she became one of those goddesses who instead of being rejected, abandoned and forgotten successfully transformed from goddess to saint allowing her to survive the times when worship of Pagan gods was no longer tolerated in Europe. It also made her one of the most celebrated goddesses outside of her place of origins in Irish/Celtic mythology.

Due to her way through history and ability to unite Paganism and Christianity nowadays she is seen as an important threshold between the old faith and new faith.

She is definitely an interesting character that's been developing through times. She has been seen differently in different times, but she has always been loved.

The stories of exploring the goddess, myths and legends related to her and the development of honoring the goddess Brigid have been published on SiltiCrafts Patreon page, and art dolls of these different faces were created and made available to public: the keeper of sacred flame, the saint and the spring goddess. After creating these 3 main expressions of the goddess, other Brigid dolls were created as well.
